Pierre-Jean Villa - Collines Rhodaniennes Esprit d'Antan Viognier 2020

Bettane & Desseauve
"On the nose, it's difficult to say that this is a schist wine as we lack perspective, but it's certainly not a granite Viognier! Mineral, flinty, with a particularly salty attack on the palate, this is a delicious white wine for a young vine. And a Seyssuel terroir to watch for white wine production! With an almost tannic signature on the finish." (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve)

About the estate:
What remarkable progress for this new winemaker, who only started out in 2009. The constant care he devotes to his various plots and his meticulous work in the cellar enable him to produce Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte-Rôtie wines that rank among the best in their respective appellations. In 2020, the Côte-Rôtie Fongeant is close to perfection. The challenge for wine lovers will be to get their hands on a few bottles.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 91/100
Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About wine:
The whites display great distinction and, above all, a lovely freshness, as exemplified by Esprit d'Antan.
About the estate:
Created in 2008, this estate has gone from strength to strength year after year. It has gradually expanded without losing sight of its philosophy: to produce wines with a distinct identity. For red wines, the proportion of whole bunches varies depending on the cuvée. High-quality aging enhances and smooths the wines without overpowering them. The whites retain their finesse. The quality and consistency of the entire production are remarkable.
