Pierre-Jean Villa - Collines Rhodaniennes Esprit d'Antan Viognier 2020

Bettane & Desseauve
“On the nose, it’s hard to tell that this is a schist wine since it lacks depth, but it’s certainly not a granite Viognier! Mineral, with gunflint notes; on the palate, the initial taste is particularly salty—this is a delicious white wine for a young vineyard. And a Seyssuel terroir to watch for white wine production! With an almost tannic finish.” (The Bettane & Desseauve Wine Guide)

About the wine:
On the nose, it’s hard to tell that this is a schist wine since we lack perspective, but it’s certainly not a granite Viognier! Mineral, with gunflint notes; on the palate, the initial taste is particularly salty; this is a delicious white wine for a young vineyard. And a Seyssuel terroir to watch for white wine production! With an almost tannic finish.
About the estate:
What a meteoric rise for this up-and-coming winemaker, who has only been in business since 2009. His constant care for his various vineyards and meticulous work in the cellar have enabled him to produce Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte-Rôtie wines that rank among the best in their respective appellations. In 2020, the Côte-Rôtie Fongeant borders on perfection. The challenge for wine lovers will be to get their hands on a few bottles.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 91/100
Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
The whites are very refined and, above all, delightfully fresh, much like Esprit d'Antan.
About the estate:
Founded in 2008, this winery has been making a name for itself year after year. It has gradually expanded without losing sight of its philosophy: to produce wines with a distinct character. For reds, the proportion of whole-cluster fermentation varies depending on the cuvée. High-quality aging processes enhance and refine the wines without making them overly smooth. The whites retain their finesse. The quality and consistency of the entire production are remarkable.
