“‘Simply perfect and masterfully balanced—he’s going to go far’ (Hachette)”

“This Tautavel will leave no one indifferent. Behind its black color lies a generous wine, opening with intense aromas of ripe red fruits, enriched with spicy notes and a hint of balsamic character. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous, rich, and aromatic (Zan, red fruits, spices), as well as very fresh, supported by well-integrated oak and tannins that are both firm and elegant, extending the finish.” (Le Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 1*Star (A high-quality, recommended production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Founded in Vingrau in 2002 by Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieumidou, this winery received valuable guidance from the start from their neighbor Hervé Bizeul’s (Clos des Fées) oenologist. In 2004, its reputation took off thanks to Decanter magazine. However, even today, the two remain part-time winemakers, despite their 10 hectares under production. The winery, housed in an old garage, remains simple yet efficient. All of the wines are very well made, establishing the estate as a sure bet in Roussillon.

About the wine:

This Tautavel will leave no one indifferent. Behind its deep black color lies a generous wine, opening with intense aromas of ripe red fruits, enriched with spicy notes and a hint of balsamic character. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous, rich, and aromatic (Zan, red berries, spices), as well as very fresh, supported by well-integrated oak and firm yet elegant tannins that extend the finish. Simply perfect and superbly balanced, this wine has great aging potential.

About the estate:

Jacques Castany worked in the transportation industry, and Pascal Dieunidou in IT. In 2002, they launched their winemaking venture in a tiny cellar. It has been a success, as evidenced by their already impressive track record. The 10-hectare vineyard is located in Vingrau, facing a spectacular cirque dominated by limestone.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on April 7, 2025

An iconic Roussillon cuvée from a sun-drenched vintage. Prestige 2019 offers a sensual wine with harmonious opulence that utterly enchants the palate with its deliciously velvety texture—beautifully drawn out by a subtle tension—as well as its richness and aromatic intensity, dominated by flavors of jammy black fruits, accompanied by subtle spices, a hint of cocoa, and a touch of licorice. A long, intensely fragrant finish. It will benefit from cellaring to temper its fiery character. This wine, with its refined elegance, will beautifully complement game, such as a traditional hare stew, or a fine cut of red meat—ideally a beautiful Aubrac rib of beef with garrigue herbs, grilled over the embers of a barbecue. Rating = 4.5.

One of the best wines from Roussillon; the 2019 vintage is currently at its peak, a new team is now at the helm of the estate, and I hope they stay the course—it’s such a pleasure year after year
