“The nose is complex, with notes of walnut and candied apricot. On the palate, it is fresh, flavorful, and very well-balanced, with hints of caramel, smoky notes, hazelnut, and toasted almond, peach, and a touch of pistachio. A truly beautiful Maury.” (Bettane & Desseauve Wine Guide 2020)

Wine rated (2020 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

4-Star Rated Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

The nose is complex, with notes of walnut and candied apricot. On the palate, it is fresh, flavorful, and very well-balanced, with hints of caramel, smoky notes, hazelnut, and toasted almond, as well as peach and a touch of pistachio. A truly beautiful Maury.

About the estate:

In Maury, Mas Amiel comprises 150 hectares of vineyards in production, spread across 132 plots, overlooked by the Cathar castle of Quéribus. Olivier Decelle (also owner of Château Jean Faure in Saint-Émilion) has acted as a patron, gradually restoring it to perfect production condition, assisted in this effort since 2007 by Nicolas Raffy, a lover of these lands. With the transition to biodynamics, the character of the wines will certainly continue to evolve in the years to come. While natural sweet wines have by no means been neglected, the focus has shifted toward the production of very modern dry wines, with a broad range covering all styles. A must-visit!

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2019) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

About the wine:

Mas Amiel strikes a balance, offering this year both a young garnet-red wine and this aged Maury, which has spent twenty years maturing in large chestnut casks in the shade of the farmhouse. A wine that tells its story of black fruits and cherries gradually transforming into prunes, cocoa, coffee, and the nutty notes characteristic of rancio. It has retained its power and presence, yet has softened and mellowed, preserving a lovely freshness that balances its sweetness, before the nutty notes take over the finish.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

In the heart of the Maury terroir, at the foot of the hillside, stands a grand estate with rows of demi-jeannes where the wines age for a year in the sun before being transferred to the cask cellar for decades. Mas Amiel, the first venture in the Olivier Decelle portfolio, is a chapter in the history of Roussillon. An estate that celebrates the tradition of great natural sweet wines, while innovating with dry wines, featuring a refined, lively, and perfectly balanced style, rooted in a heritage of old vines. Nicolas Raffy, a talented Catalan winemaker, proudly champions wines made from calcoschist, black marl, and granite soils. He has identified steep plots, adapted his blends, aging methods, and harvest dates so that the dry Maury wines can join the VDNs at the very top. The estate is undoubtedly one of the leading names today. In recent years, the progress made with the dry wines has been spectacular. The third star is on the horizon.

It could be compared to a port-style wine or walnut wine. It makes a pleasant aperitif.

A lovely bottle that’s a real pleasure to drink—certainly not on the same level as a 20-year-old Tawny Port from a prestigious producer that I tasted alongside it, but excellent value for money... 16+

Impressive. A classic nose of prunes with hints of almond and candied apricot. Rich on the palate, with a acidity that makes it easier to enjoy as an aperitif than a 10- or 20-year-old Tawny Port. Magnificent finish.
