"The latest vintage of Maury 40 Ans features invigorating nutty aromas and hints of maple syrup. Yet it is surprisingly ready to drink, ranging from medium-bodied to full-bodied, with moderate sugar content and notes of mocha and ripe citrus on a long, lingering finish." (Wine Advocate 2019 - Joe Czerwinski)

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2020 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
4-Star Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French winemaking)
About the wine:
Aroma of salted butter caramel, seaweed, and toasted bread. On the palate, notes of plum and roasted peach, with great vibrancy, exceptional salinity and acidity, and a seemingly endless finish of dried fruit. Timeless.
About the estate:
In Maury, Mas Amiel comprises 150 hectares of vineyards in production, spread across 132 plots, overlooked by the Cathar castle of Quéribus. Olivier Decelle (also owner of Château Jean Faure in Saint-Émilion) has acted as a patron, gradually restoring it to peak production condition, assisted in this effort since 2007 by Nicolas Raffy, who is deeply passionate about these lands. With the transition to biodynamic farming, the character of the wines will certainly continue to evolve in the years to come. While natural sweet wines have by no means been neglected—far from it—the focus has shifted to the production of very modern dry wines, with a broad range covering all styles. A must-visit destination!

Rated Estate (2024 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
It is characterized by a long, complex rancio.
About the estate:
In the heart of the Maury region, at the foot of the hillside, stands a large estate with rows of demi-jeannes in which the wines age for a year in the sun before being transferred to the cask cellar for decades. Mas Amiel, the first estate in the Olivier Decelle family of wineries, is a chapter in the history of Roussillon. An estate that celebrates the tradition of great natural sweet wines, while also innovating with dry wines, featuring a refined, vibrant, and perfectly balanced style, rooted in a heritage of old vines. Nicolas Raffy, a talented Catalan winemaker, proudly champions wines made from calcoschist, black marl, and granite soils. He has identified steep plots and adapted his blends, aging methods, and harvest dates so that the dry Maury wines can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the VDNs at the very top. The estate is now undeniably among the leading names in the region. In recent years, the progress made with the dry wines has been spectacular. The third star is on the horizon.

In my opinion, one of the top 3 or 4 fortified wines from the South of France. An explosion of pleasant aromas and a finish that just goes on and on....

Nuts, curry, hot metal, bitter oranges—exceptional! - Sweet fortified wine, aged oxidatively in open demijohns for 1 year, then in barrels for 40 years
