Bettane & Desseauve
4-Star-Rated Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaegue have taken this estate to the top of Cahors through meticulous viticulture and precise winemaking. The 27 hectares (25 of which are planted with red grapes) are divided into three plots spread across two of the appellation’s finest soil types, notably the famous third terrace. One is clay-limestone and produces wines of great finesse. The other consists of pebbles mixed with reddish sand, ideal for producing more powerful wines.
Guide Hachette des vins
Wine noted (guide 2024) 1*Star (Very successful wine)
About the wine:
After 30 months in 500-liter barrels, this cuvée offers a rich bouquet of jammy black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), mocha, and toasty notes. This interplay of wood and fruit also permeates a full-bodied, rich, opulent, and voluminous palate. It has character and potential.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100
Rated estate (2027 guide): 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience.)
About the wine:
This cuvée is made from vines between 50 and 60 years old and vinified in new 500-liter open barrels. It offers floral aromas, a deep, sensual, and dense palate, and a mouthfeel that reveals both limestone and clay, enhanced by the absence of sulfur prior to bottling.
About the estate:
When the Verhaeghe brothers took over their parents’ farm, they began to write a new chapter in the history of Cahors wine. Today, it falls to Jules—Pascal’s son—along with his partner, Aurore Del Vito, to shape the future and elevate Le Cèdre to the pinnacle of the Cahors appellation. Their exceptional terroir partly explains this success: on one side, the “tran”—cones of limestone scree in constant motion—produces wines of great finesse; on the other, a soil of pebbles on iron-rich sand lends power and depth. The grapes, harvested at perfect ripeness, yield wines of rare consistency and intensity. The Extra Libre range, with no added sulfur, is part of a natural winemaking approach, while the other wines receive sulfur only at bottling.

Rated Estate (2025 Guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)
About the wine:
Château du Cèdre’s best wine is made entirely from Malbec. It is a full-bodied, dense wine with powerful tannins and aromas of dark fruit that successfully balances the acidity. This impressive wine needs time to age. Best enjoyed starting in 2026. Organic.
James Suckling
Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100
About the wine:
On the nose, plenty of sweet blue plums, blueberries, wet stones, stemmy herbs, and delicate spices. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Rich and expansive, yet concentrated on the finish. Cleverly structured with a good amount of fresh, chalky tannins, it displays balance, vibrancy, and energy. A savory, lingering finish, yet never heavy. Made from organically grown grapes. Ready to drink now or for aging.
