"A nice balance between sweetness and freshness"

“An amazing 2016 from start to finish: a lovely golden-yellow color; an intense and complex nose of candied fruit, dried fruit, hazelnut, and vanilla; a rich and smooth palate that is never heavy, with a subtle freshness that provides support and adds length and vibrancy. A delicious wine with great aging potential.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins)

Wine rated (2019 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the wine:

Beautiful energy with a finely crafted finish.

About the estate:

Since 1981, Sylvie and Jean-François Deffarge have spared no effort in upholding the Montravel name at this estate, which they inherited from Jean-François’s father. Today, the estate spans 52 hectares located on the hillsides and the Vélines plateau. While the estate has not yet made the switch to organic farming, it strives to do the best it can. The next generation is already in the starting blocks: Quentin and Benjamin are now involved in the estate’s operations and are taking the reins. The extensive and well-structured portfolio allows them to offer wines suited to every occasion. The new winery will enable them to take their vision even further, notably by developing a few experimental cuvées as a complement to their existing range.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

While the estate boasts an impressive track record in Favorites, it owes this success to its Montravel reds. Jean-François Deffarge proves here that he has also mastered sweet white wines. A stunning 2016 from start to finish: a lovely golden-yellow color; an intense and complex nose of candied fruit, dried fruit, hazelnut, and vanilla; a rich and smooth palate that’s never heavy, with a subtle freshness providing structure and lending length and vibrancy. A delicious wine with great aging potential.

About the estate:

A long-standing family estate (since 1749) situated on the hills above Montravel, this expansive property is now one of the leading names in the Bergerac region, thanks to the work carried out since 1990 (when the estate left the cooperative) by Jean-François Deffarge, a “self-taught oenologist,” who is now handing the reins over to his sons Benjamin and Quentin. The vineyard (50 ha) spans two distinct terroirs: clay-limestone slopes and a high plateau of boulbène. In the process of converting to organic farming.

Review and comment by Mr. FREDERIC B. Posted on 12/30/2020

Not very interesting, whether on the nose or on the palate. The value for money is well below that of a Coteau de l'Aubance AOP in the Domaine de Montgilet style offered by the website.
