Bettane & Desseauve

“A beautiful deep color with purple highlights. An inviting nose with subtle toasted notes, spice, blackcurrant, plum, and a woody undertone. A supple attack; structured, dense, and full-bodied on the palate, though still somewhat reserved, with vegetal notes that have yet to fully integrate—a well-structured wine that should be allowed to age gently.” (Le Guide des Vins 2017 - Gilbert & Gaillard)

Wine rated (2018 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the wine:

A powerful, concentrated, rich, and ripe Montravel, best cellared for a few years—a fine bottle in the making.

About the estate:

Since 1981, Sylvie and Jean-François Deffarge have spared no effort in upholding the Montravel legacy on this estate inherited from Jean-François’s father. Today, it comprises 52 hectares located on the hillsides and the Vélines plateau. While the estate has not yet made the switch to organic farming, it strives to do the best it can. The next generation is already in the starting blocks: Quentin and Benjamin are now involved in the estate’s operations and are taking the reins. The extensive and well-structured portfolio allows them to offer wines suited to every occasion. The new winery will enable them to take their vision even further, notably by developing a few experimental cuvées as a complement to their existing range.

About the estate:

A long-standing family estate (since 1749) situated on the hills above Montravel, this expansive property is now one of the leading names in the Bergerac region, thanks to the work carried out since 1990 (when the estate left the cooperative) by Jean-François Deffarge, a “self-taught oenologist,” who is now handing the reins over to his sons Benjamin and Quentin. The vineyard (50 ha) spans two distinct terroirs: clay-limestone slopes and a high plateau of boulbène. In the process of converting to organic farming.
