"The Power of the Southwest—a must-see!"

“Made from Merlot (50%), Malbec (30%), and Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in oak barrels, this is an intense, full-bodied, elegant, and fresh red wine suitable for aging, with fine tannins and distinct, subtle empyreumatic oak notes (smoke, tobacco) that are still very present.” (Le Guide Hachette 2024).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2027 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable vintage, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Sylvie and Jean-François Deffarge have proudly represented Montravel at this family-owned estate since 1749, which spans 38 hectares on the hillsides and the Vélines plateau. They have recently handed the reins over to their sons, Quentin and Benjamin, while remaining on hand to support them. The extensive lineup offers wines suitable for every occasion. The estate obtained organic certification in 2022.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2024 guide) 2*Stars (Outstanding Wine)

Rated Estate: Award-Winning Wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

Made from Merlot (50%), Malbec (30%), and Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in oak barrels, this is an intense, full-bodied, elegant, and fresh red wine suitable for aging, with fine tannins and distinct, subtle empyreumatic oak notes (smoke, tobacco) that remain very pronounced.

About the estate:

A very old family estate (1749) located on the hills above Montravel, this vast property is now one of the leading names in the Bergerac region, thanks to the work carried out since 1990 (when the estate left the cooperative) by Jean-François Deffarge, a “self-taught oenologist,” who is now handing the reins over to his sons Benjamin and Quentin. The vineyard (50 ha) spans two distinct terroirs: clay-limestone slopes and a high plateau of boulbène soil. Currently in the process of converting to organic farming.
