Domaine Anita - Morgon Château-Gaillard 2020
94/100
James Suckling
"Stunning!"
“A stunning nose of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and smoke, with just a hint of balsamic vinegar. Ripe and firm with a ton of mineral character from crushed stone. Very bold, but in the best possible way! All of this requires a bit of time in the bottle to round out the fine tannins and lively acidity. Great aging potential! Drink now, but best from 2024.” (James Suckling 2022). The small clusters harvested from this plot have yieldeda cuvée worthy of the greatest wines.

Rated estate (2023 guide) 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable vintage, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Originally from Bresse, Anita Khunel, after a brilliant career as a road cyclist (she competed in the World Championships in Slovenia in 1996!), decided to return to the family estate that same year. There, she learned the craft of viticulture and winemaking before establishing her own winery in 2015: Domaine Anita. Today, the estate encompasses six appellations: Moulin-à-Vent, Chénas, Morgon, Fleurie, Beaujolais, and Beaujolais-Villages. Known for her structured style, Anita Kuhnel achieves greater precision and balance with each passing year. 2017 is a great success. We’re not far from that third star!

Deliciously crisp red fruit, the necessary earthiness, and subtle acidity and tannins that provide structure and tension. A truly lovely Morgon with even more aging potential. A fine example of the Morgon appellation. Score: 16/20
