"A rare gem"

“The 2009 Chablis Vaudésir has a very pure bouquet with lovely notes of limestone and smoke emerging through layers of lime and grapefruit. The palate is well-balanced with a clean acidity, good depth, and a concentrated, resinous finish with hints of peach skin that lingers nicely on the palate.” (Wine Advocate)

Grape varieties

100% Chardonnay

Terroirs

Very stony, marly, and shallow soil; mostly north-facing

Viticulture

Verget sources its grapes from passionate winemakers, selected for their dedication and their winemaking methods that respect the vines and the terroir

Grape Harvest

In 2009, a north-facing vineyard was selected for this Grand Cru, allowing for slow and perfect ripening: this vineyard was harvested a week after the others

Winemaking

Alcoholic fermentation in barrels, 10% of which are new, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels

Livestock farming

Aged in barrels for 7 months on fine lees with stirring twice a month, then in horizontal stainless steel tanks for 6 months on fine lees

Nose

This wine, which initially seemed austere, has really come into its own during aging on the lees. It is also one of the finest wines produced in 2009. The nose is slightly exotic and then develops aromas of white flowers.

Rated estate (2020 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

The Verget wine merchant is part of the Guffens-Heynen “trilogy,” where Jean-Marie Guffens, supported by his loyal right-hand man Julien Desplans, applies the time-tested methods he has used on his elite estate since the 1980s—methods that serve as a global benchmark for Chardonnay. The flagship here remains the Mâconnais, but purchases from the Chablis region are regular, and depending on the vintages, there are fine cuvées from the Côte de Beaune. Reserving en primeur is all the more advisable as it offers the opportunity to purchase “terroir-less” wines in screw-cap bottles, proof that terroir isn’t always the sole determinant of quality. Finally, it’s worth noting that this is the place to stock up on Guffens aux Tourettes and Verget du Sud, at unbeatable value-for-money prices, as reviewed in the Rhône Valley section of this guide. An exemplary destination.
