Bettane & Desseauve

“The Saucilles Pommard offers immediate roundness, with a beautifully concentrated structure.” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2013 - RVF). A wine with surprising roundness and smoothness on the palate, with a hint of bitterness on the finish that lends it a lovely freshness. Very delicious!

Wine rated (2013 guide) 15,5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

Beautifully ripe grapes, smooth, full-bodied, elegant texture, lovely finish. Excellent winemaking.

About the estate:

The Verget wine merchant is part of the Guffens-Heynen “trilogy,” where Jean-Marie Guffens, supported by his loyal right-hand man Julien Desplans, applies the time-tested methods he has used on his elite estate since the 1980s—methods that serve as a global benchmark for Chardonnay. The flagship here remains the Mâconnais, but purchases from the Chablis region are regular, and depending on the vintages, there are fine cuvées from the Côte de Beaune. Reserving en primeur is all the more advisable as it offers the opportunity to purchase “terroir-less” wines in screw-cap bottles, proof that terroir isn’t always the sole determinant of quality. Finally, it’s worth noting that this is the place to stock up on Guffens aux Tourettes and Verget du Sud, at unbeatable value-for-money prices, as reviewed in the Rhône Valley section of this guide. An exemplary destination.

Named “Wine Merchant of the Year” by the RVF jury in 2020, the house is unanimously praised for its unparalleled winemaking, highly selective sourcing, and precision in pressing and aging. Review by Ms. ANNIE V. Posted on January 11, 2019

I bought two bottles of this wine in October 2018. The first bottle, opened in November, was corked and undrinkable. Fortunately, the second bottle, opened for Christmas, was not, but we found this Pommard Premier Cru to be lacking in depth and disappointing. All in all, considering the price, it was a very disappointing purchase. I wrote to Verget but received no response.
