“A rich, smooth Faugères that’s ready to drink—an exclusive from Jean-Michel Alquier”

“Les Grandes Bastides d'Alquier 2012 [...] displays developed aromas of dried cherries and cigar boxes, with plenty of vanilla, as well as notes of licorice and roasted meat. It is medium-bodied, with supple tannins, a creamy, velvety palate, and a remarkably enticing finish. Ready to drink now, it should age for another 4–5 years without any issues.” (Wine Advocate 2020). Limited quantities.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 92/100 (Excellent wine)

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Les Grandes Bastides d'Alquier 2012 comes from the upper slopes of the estate's gray schist hillsides and is primarily made from Syrah, with some old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre. Aged for two years in barrels (about 50% new), the wine displays developed aromas of dried cherries and cigar boxes, with plenty of vanilla, as well as notes of licorice and roasted meat. It is medium-bodied, with supple tannins, a creamy and velvety palate, and a remarkably enticing finish. Ready to drink now, it should age well for another 4–5 years.

About the estate:

Sophie and Thibaud Bardi de Fourtou took over this historic Faugères estate in 2017. The wines we tasted for this issue are the last vestiges of the transition from Jean-Michel Alquier to the new owners. The couple’s goal? To preserve the estate’s signature style, whose vineyards are dominated by old Syrah vines from massal selections (among the first planted in Languedoc in the 1960s by Jean-Michel Alquier’s father, Gilbert), complemented by Mourvèdre and Grenache. We will be keeping a close eye on this new chapter.
