“Les Grandes Bastides d’Alquier 2012 [...] displays developed aromas of dried cherries and cigar boxes, with plenty of vanilla, as well as notes of licorice and roasted meat. It is medium-bodied, with supple tannins, a creamy and velvety mouthfeel, and a remarkably enticing finish. Ready to drink now, it should age well for another 4–5 years.” (Wine Advocate 2020). Wine rated (2020 guide) 92/100 (Excellent wine)
Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)
About the wine:
The 2012 Les Grandes Bastides d'Alquier comes from the upper slopes of the estate’s gray schist hillsides and is primarily made from Syrah, with some old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre. Aged for two years in barrels (about 50% new), the wine displays developed aromas of dried cherries and cigar boxes, with plenty of vanilla, as well as notes of licorice and roasted meat. It is medium-bodied, with supple tannins, a creamy and velvety mouthfeel, and a remarkably enticing finish. Ready to drink now, it should age well for another 4–5 years.

About the estate:
Sophie and Thibaud Bardi de Fourtou took over this historic estate in Faugères in 2017. The wines we tasted for this edition are the last vestiges of the transition from Jean-Michel Alquier to the new owners. The couple’s goal? To preserve the estate’s signature style, whose vineyards are dominated by old Syrah vines from massal selections (among the first planted in Languedoc in the 1960s by Jean-Michel Alquier’s father, Gilbert), complemented by Mourvèdre and Grenache. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new chapter.
