"For his Cairanne, Vignon keeps the Grenache (55%), Syrah (20%), and Cinsault (5%) in cold storage until he can harvest the Mourvèdre (15%) and Marselan (5%), and then ferments them all together. The 2019 Cairanne offers vibrant notes of red raspberries and even strawberries, along with deeper notes of black cherries, all framed by silky tannins. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, this is another outstanding effort from Vignon, whose entire 2019 lineup appears to be very strong.” (Wine Advocate 2020)

To optimize co-fermentation, the Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault grapes were kept in cold pre-fermentation for more than three weeks; fermentation was not initiated until after the Mourvèdre and Marselan grapes had been harvested, allowing them—in an exceptional move—to be vinified and aged together.

About the wine:

Very old vines. Fresh and light, it isn’t very deep, but it offers plenty of vibrant berries to savor. Well-balanced acidity. A nice sense of liveliness. The alcohol has some punch, which is typical for the 2019 vintage in Cairanne. But it also has a certain freshness and is easy to drink.

About the wine:

Generous aromas of plum cake blend with a full-bodied structure and slightly rustic tannins in this bold, full-bodied Cairanne. The finish is fairly dry. Enjoy now.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on September 29, 2024

Xavier Vignon reimagines Cairanne with this bold cuvée, shaped by the warmth of an exceptional 2019 vintage. With a playful, slightly carefree character, the wine almost makes you forget its 15% alcohol content, giving way to a dense, rich body with thrilling freshness, enhanced by intense fruitiness with lovely spicy and smoky notes and hints of garrigue. Endowed with slightly rustic yet well-integrated tannins, it is sufficiently balanced to allow its lively, silky texture to express itself fully right through to the taut finish. Attractive price. To complement its undeniably fruity brilliance, I chose to pair it with osso bucco served over a creamy Milanese-style risotto. Rating = 3.9.
