“A charming Côtes du Roussillon”

"A blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 10% Carignan, and 5% Mourvèdre, and aged in second-fill barrels, the 2019 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel L'Edre has a slightly citrusy nose, but also hints at bay leaves, rose petals, and fragrant cherry fruit. Medium-bodied, it is more structured and tannic than the estate’s Carrement cuvée.” (Wine Advocate 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 1 star (A high-quality, recommended wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Founded in Vingrau in 2002 by Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieumidou, this winery received valuable guidance from the start from their neighbor Hervé Bizeul’s (Clos des Fées) oenologist. In 2004, its reputation took off thanks to Decanter magazine. However, even today, the two remain part-time winemakers, despite their 10 hectares under production. The winery, housed in an old garage, remains simple yet efficient. All of the wines are very well made, establishing the estate as a sure bet in the Roussillon region.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

Jacques Castany worked in the transportation industry, and Pascal Dieunidou in IT. In 2002, they launched their winemaking venture in a tiny cellar. It has been a success, as evidenced by their already impressive track record. The 10-hectare vineyard is located in Vingrau, facing a spectacular cirque dominated by limestone.

About the wine:

Medium-bodied, it is more structured and tannic than the estate’s Carrement cuvée. It will have a longer finish, but will it be just as enjoyable?

An iconic Roussillon cuvée from a sunny vintage. Prestige 2019 offers a sensual wine with harmonious opulence that utterly enchants the palate with its deliciously velvety texture, beautifully sustained by a subtle tension, as well as its richness and aromatic intensity, dominated by flavors of jammy black fruits, accompanied by subtle spices, a hint of cocoa, and a touch of licorice. A long, intensely fragrant finish. Will benefit from cellaring to channel its vigor. This wine, with its refined elegance, will enhance game meats, such as a traditional hare stew, or a fine cut of red meat, ideally a beautiful Aubrac ribeye with garrigue herbs grilled over the embers of a barbecue. Rating = 4.5.

one of the best wines from Roussillon; the 2019 vintage is currently at its peak, a new team is now at the helm of the estate, and I hope they stay the course, given how much enjoyment it brings year after year
