About the estate:
Bright. That’s surely the adjective that best describes Roc des Anges, both in terms of the style of the wines and the modern, aesthetically pleasing winery built by Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet. They built their estate from the ground up, and today it spans 45 hectares under production. These wines are highly drinkable, with alcohol levels on the lower side for the region; careful viticulture and a well-timed harvest ensure the wines never feel heavy. Biodynamic farming accounts for part of this uniqueness in the Roussillon region, as does the very distinctive terroir of Montner—featuring very fine schist that behaves like sand. This estate consistently delivers some of the most delightful dry wines in the entire department.

Dark red color, ruby with a slight purplish tinge. Smoky on the nose with notes of cocoa and licorice, and a hint of black fruit (somewhere between blackberry and blackcurrant). The palate is fresh with a fairly supple texture (the tannins are well-integrated), focused on fruit, and a fairly pronounced bitterness on the finish. Served slightly chilled to “soften” its southern character, it seemed to me to pair better with a meal than on its own, as the bitterness was too pronounced on the finish for my taste. Good+
