Bettane & Desseauve
Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
This large 28-hectare estate was long run by André and Michel. Guillaume, Michel's son, arrived in 2009. The estate is located on the steep slopes of Torméry, south of Chignin. It was Guillaume's grandfather who replanted the vineyard in the 1950s. The estate avoids herbicides as much as possible but cannot work all its plots by hand. Guillaume is experimenting with organic farming on the two and a half hectares he took over to form the Côteau de Torméry estate. He is also experimenting with ageing in large oak barrels or sandstone vats. A wide and consistent range with promising innovations.

About the estate:
Michel Quénard took over the family estate, founded by his grandparents, in 1976. His son Guillaume joined him in 2009, after studying at the Beaune wine school and then at the Changins engineering school (Switzerland), and took over the reins of this estate, one of the most renowned in Savoie, which produces wines of consistently high quality, both red and white.

The 2018 is a good wine, but disappointing compared to the 2015, which was exceptional. Inconsistent quality from bottle to bottle, unless it is poorly stored. One bottle was almost undrinkable due to dominant fermentation aromas.

When tasting a second bottle nine months later, the sharp, lively tannins of Arbin 2018 had mellowed: the palate had gained in suppleness and the acidity was less aggressive. However, nothing has changed in terms of the ripe fruit and subtle spicy aromas that contribute to the overall balance. A pleasant finish, fresh and light. A score of 3.7 for this Mondeuse, which is made for aging but lacks the finesse of Château De Mérande's La Belle Romaine. Our friends thoroughly enjoyed tasting this wine served at 16°C with crêpes des Alpages (Reblochon made with raw milk and 13-month matured Savoie cured ham), accompanied by a generous plate of Grisons meat.
