Sourced from the finest plots of the iconic Arbin terroir, the Les Terres Brunes cuvée is distinguished by its iron-rich clay-limestone soil. This wine, with its complex, fruity, and smoky nose, offers an intense and dense palate with aromas of raspberry and peony. A beautiful terroir-driven wine...

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

This large 28-hectare estate was long managed by André and Michel. Guillaume, Michel’s son, joined the business in 2009. The estate is located on the steep hillside of Torméry, south of Chignin. It was the grandfather who oversaw the replanting in the 1950s. The estate avoids herbicides as much as possible but cannot work all its plots by hand. Guillaume is experimenting with organic farming on the two and a half hectares he acquired to establish the Côteau de Torméry estate. He is also conducting aging trials in large oak casks or stoneware. A broad, consistent range with promising innovations.

About the estate:

Michel Quénard took over the family estate, founded by his grandparents, in 1976. His son Guillaume joined him in 2009, after studying at the wine school in Beaune and then at the engineering school in Changins (Switzerland), and took over the reins of this estate, one of the most renowned in Savoie, known for its consistently high quality in both red and white wines.

The 2018 is a good wine, but disappointing compared to the 2015, which was exceptional. Quality varies from bottle to bottle, unless it’s simply not aging well. One bottle was nearly undrinkable due to overpowering fermentation aromas.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on November 1, 2021

Upon tasting a second bottle nine months later, the sharp, lively tannins of the 2018 Arbin have mellowed: the palate has gained suppleness and the acidity is less aggressive. On the other hand, nothing has changed regarding the rich fruit ripeness and the nuanced spicy aromas that contribute to a good overall balance. A pleasant, lingering finish full of freshness and lightness. A score of 3.7 for this Mondeuse built for aging, though it lacks the finesse of Château De Mérande’s La Belle Romaine. My friends thoroughly enjoyed this wine, served at 16°C with Alpine crêpes (made with raw-milk Reblochon and 13-month-aged Savoie cured ham), accompanied by a generous plate of Bündnerfleisch.
