"Vinous describes this bottle as a prime example of the complexity typical of Malbecs from the Mendoza region: a velvety and incredibly flavorful wine."

“A fresh, ripe nose of blackberries, chocolatey mint, black cherries, minerals, and delicate spices. Juicy, full-bodied, and compact, with a flavorful mid-palate, rich with fine, dusty tannins. Long and smooth, with rich yet fresh fruit and cocoa powder on the finish. Ready to drink or worth cellaring. ” (James Suckling 2024)

Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

The 2021 Catena Alta Malbec is made from 70% grapes grown in Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, with the remainder coming from Luján and Maipú. Aged for up to 18 months in new and used French oak barrels, this deep purple wine reveals aromas of plum and cherry, along with notes of lavender and violet, all set against a subtle hint of cedar. Dry and juicy, its supple, velvety tannins are complemented by a lively mouthfeel, resulting in a moderately structured red with a savory, lingering finish. If there is such a thing as the “key” to Mendoza Malbec—that is, a blend of terroirs designed to enhance complexity—this bottle could be the perfect example. 2024–2038
