“The 2009 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre brings silky fruit and crystal-clear precision to the glass that is difficult to put into words. The wine glides across the palate with inimitable grace and class. The richness of the fruit (peach, apricot) is beautifully balanced with floral and mint notes. A magnificent demonstration of Billaud-Simon’s artistry. ” (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)

Wine rated (2012 guide) 16,5/20 (Reference wine)

About the wine:

Very clean nose with gunflint notes; sharp on the palate; a taut, tight finish; lots of character.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2012) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

About the wine:

La Montée de Tonnerre is geographically situated alongside the grands crus. It’s no surprise that its terroir often produces highly complex wines. This is certainly true of this 2009 vintage, which surprises with its expressive nose dominated by quince. On the palate, the fruit remains very present and is complemented by tangy notes. A touch of minerality underscores this elegant profile, which will also prove appealing after three years of aging.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated (2012 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good)

About the wine:

Favorite top-tier Chablis Favorite , effortlessly transcending the influence of its vintage to offer a superb, textured balance. We love the fullness on the palate, which is punctuated by a rhythmic mineral edge. The chalky, creamy finish is absolutely beautiful. A truly exceptional bottle—one worth holding onto for a little while longer to maximize the enjoyment.

Wine rated (2012 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

The 2009 vintages really won us over, especially the Montée de Tonnerre, with its balance and richness.

About the estate:

This family-owned estate, established in Chablis since 1815, changed hands in 2014, becoming part of the Faiveley estate. This expanded Faiveley’s portfolio, which already included 20 hectares of Chablis’s finest terroirs, featuring four grands crus: Les Clos, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, and Les Blanchots; four premiers crus: Montée de Tonnerre, Mont-de-Milieu, Fourchaume, and Vaillons, as well as Chablis and Petit Chablis. Olivier Bailly was appointed estate manager in 2014 and quickly refined the winemaking process. Starting in 2016, the return to top quality became evident, and this estate is now one of the most reliable in Chablis.

An excellent Montée de Tonnerre. The nose has notes of flint, and the palate is full-bodied yet taut. The best Chablis I’ve tasted in 10 years.

Pale gold color with silvery highlights, dense and clear. The nose is rich and fairly aromatic, though somewhat reserved and half-closed, with notes of yellow fruit (peach) and a slight hint of minerality. For now, it’s a bit disjointed, with aromas that lack a bit of precision; this is likely a wine still in transition. The palate is fresh, quite generous, and well-integrated and round. The finish is alcohol-driven, with good length (PAI 4-5). In short, it needs another 2-3 years of aging. At 20 euros, the price-to-pleasure ratio isn’t quite there yet.

In my opinion (and I don't know anything about it), this is a wine that needs to be allowed to oxidize, and four hours of aeration is the bare minimum. Otherwise, it's a bit flat.
