“There are only 2,000 bottles of the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Vernays, a cuvée sourced from fine, chalky soils. Unfolding in the glass with notes of green pear, toasted wheat bread, and beeswax, it is medium- to full-bodied, powerful and muscular, with a racy backbone of acidity and abundant chalky dry extract, ending with a long, penetrating finish. It is well worth seeking out. ” (Wine Advocate 2019)

Very mineral, with aromas of wet stone followed by toasted bread

Palate

Very linear, with a remarkable tannic structure—uncommon for a white wine. The initial impression on the palate is rich, then quickly evolves into mineral notes. The finish is perfectly clean and precise. The length on the palate is remarkable.

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

The Verget wine merchant is part of the Guffens-Heynen “trilogy,” where Jean-Marie Guffens, supported by his trusted right-hand man Julien Desplans, applies the tried-and-true methods he has used on his elite estate since the 1980s—methods that serve as a global benchmark for Chardonnay. The Mâconnais region remains the flagship here, but the company regularly purchases wines from the Chablis region, and, depending on the vintage, there are some fine cuvées from the Côte de Beaune. Pre-release reservations are particularly wise, as they offer the opportunity to purchase “terroir-neutral” wines in screw-cap bottles—proof that terroir isn’t always the sole determinant of quality. Finally, it’s worth noting that this is the place to find Guffens aux Tourettes and Verget du Sud at unbeatable value-for-money ratios, as reviewed in this guide’s Rhône Valley section. An exemplary shop.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated Estate (2022 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that—thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines—deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

Les Vernays, harvested in Fuissé, offers a moderate style in terms of richness, with its luxurious oak notes balanced by a fresh, mineral structure.

About the estate:

Jean-Marie Guffens has poured all his talent and high standards into this “haute couture” wine merchant, founded in 1990. Julien Desplans, a brilliant winemaker trained at Romanée-Conti, has been at the helm of Maison Verget since 2012. Named “Wine Merchant of the Year” by the RVF jury in 2020, the house is unanimously praised for its unparalleled winemaking, highly selective sourcing, and the precision of its pressing and aging processes. Let’s celebrate these 2019 vintages, a true testament to the house’s mastery.
