Pouilly-Loché
The Pouilly-Loché Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is a village appellation in the Mâconnais region of Saône-et-Loire. The Pouilly-Loché appellation may be followed by the name of the vineyard plot (climat) where the wine is produced and applies exclusively to the commune of Loché.
The Pouilly-Loché AOC occupies a portion of the east-facing hillside overlooking the Saône Valley at an elevation of 200 to 250 meters—an ideal altitude for this continental climate, which is perfectly suited to the Chardonnay grape variety due to its autumn sunshine. Due to the numerous faults that have shaped the Mâconnais region since the Mesozoic era, the terroirs of Pouilly-Loché are varied and complex despite the vineyard’s small size (some 32 hectares). To the north of the village, the soils are older, sandstone and schist, warming quickly in the sun; to the south, on the border with Vinzelles, the soils are ferruginous clay-limestone, quite similar to those of that village. This variety of soils largely determines the distinct character of Pouilly-Loché’s various climats, of which Domaine Bret Brothers offers an excellent example.
Pouilly-Loché winesare white wines made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. They are crisp and lively, with an initial citrus aroma that lends itself to pairings full of character. After 3 to 5 years in the bottle, depending on the vintage, the more complex notes of Pouilly-Loché emerge , revealing a beautiful amber-gold color.
