Valencia

Valencia is the Denominación de Origen (DO) established in 1932 for wines produced in the Valencia region of Spain. The appellation is divided into four production zones: Valentín, which covers the land rising gradually from the sea toward the interior; Alto Rúria, located west of Valentín and comprising a plateau reaching an altitude of 625 meters; Moscatel, located west of the city; and Clariano, an area isolated from the others and bounded to the north by the city of Valencia and to the south by the city of Xàtiva.

The grape varieties used to produce Valencia wines are numerous, including both local and foreign varieties. Red wines are made from Monastrell, Garnacha, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Bobal. White wines, meanwhile, are blended primarily from Merseguera, Malvasía, Moscatel, Macabeo, Forcayat, Sémillon, Tortosí, or Verdil.

The Valencia appellation, influenced by both the hot, dry Mediterranean climate and the elevation of some of its vineyards, offers an interesting diversity of wines, including both white and red varieties. Wine enthusiasts will find something to their liking among the wines offered by one of the 87 producing estates, notably Bodegas El Angosto and Blackboard Wines.
