Valencia

Valencia is the Denominación de Origen (DO) established in 1932 for wines produced in the Valencia region of Spain. The appellation is divided into four production zones: the Valentin, which encompasses the land rising gradually from the sea toward the interior; the Alto Ruria, located west of the Valentin and comprising a plateau reaching an altitude of 625 meters; the Moscatel, located west of the city; and the Clariano, an area isolated from the others and bounded to the north by the city of Valencia and to the south by the city of Xàtiva.

Numerous grape varieties, both local and foreign, are used to produce Valencia’s wines. Red wines are made from Monastrell, Grenache, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Bobal. White wines, meanwhile, are blended primarily from Merseguera, Malvasía, Moscatel, Macabeo, Forcayat, Sémillon, Tortosí, and Verdil.

The Valencia appellation, influenced by both the hot, dry Mediterranean climate and the elevation of some of its vineyards, offers an interesting variety of wines, including both white and red. Wine enthusiasts are sure to find something to their liking among the wines offered by one of the 87 producers, notably Bodegas El Angosto and Blackboard Wines.
