Jean-Michel Alquier had no idea that this micro-cuvée, which he created less than 10 years ago, would be in such high demand that he could barely keep a few bottles for himself! Here’s his story: “In 2001, I had a small plot that was rather ‘rich’ for Faugères, and I didn’t know what to plant! So I decided to introduce this grape variety ( Sauvignon) to my property. The root system develops further each year, thereby enhancing the wine’s minerality. At the time, I figured that if this wine turned out to be unsellable, I could always drink it with friends! About 400 bottles a month—that’s 13 bottles a day!!!” A rare cuvée worth discovering!

Sophie and Thibaud Bardi de Fourtou took over this historic estate in Faugères in 2017. The wines we tasted for this issue are the last to reflect the transition from Jean-Michel Alquier to the new owners. The couple’s goal? To preserve the estate’s signature style, whose vineyard is dominated by old Syrah vines from massal selections (among the first planted in Languedoc in the 1960s by Jean-Michel Alquier’s father, Gilbert) complemented by Mourvèdre and Grenache. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new chapter.
