Robert Parker
“One of the estate’s signature wines, elegant and harmonious”
“The Clos de Coulaine 2021 offers a lively and delicate bouquet with aromas of lemon oil, herbs, sage, spring flowers, and white flowers, intertwined with notes of lemon oil. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, lively, and fragrant, the wine is smooth, well-balanced, and complete. It is an elegant expression of this historic Savennières terroir.” (Robert Parker 2024).

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
This 45-hectare vineyard, 80% of which is planted with Chenin, produces a wide range of white wines. René handles the winemaking, while his older brother Christophe tends the vines. They aren’t organic, to be sure, but the soil is worked “their own way.” In the cellar, the same meticulous care prevails, with a variety of vats of all kinds (stainless steel, cement, cylindrical, buried, 30-hectoliter wooden vats by Stockinger...), suited to crafting nuanced and complex wines. The sweet wines are the estate’s greatest strength, as is the Savennières series (13 hectares), impeccably balanced.

About the estate:
This 46-hectare estate, formed by the merger of two family-run vineyards, has been managed by René Papin since 2010. It is particularly renowned for the quality of its white wines, both dry and sweet. A must-visit.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 93/100
About the wine:
The 2021 Savennières Clos de Coulaine reflects the low yields caused by frost. There is just enough body in the mid-palate, thanks to 18 months on the lees, complemented by a firm backbone of acidity and minerality, providing structure and length. It really comes into its own on the finish with a spicy note and hints of flowers and flint.

A flat, short-lived, and disappointing wine. Maybe it was just a bad bottle?
