Savennières
The appellation Savennières is limited to three municipalities south of Angers on the right bank of the Loire: Savennières, Bouchemaine, and La Possonnière. The excellent growing conditions were likely recognized as early as the Roman invasions. Vine cultivation developed during the era of the great abbeys, was continued by the lords, and then, in the 19th century, by the Angevin bourgeoisie. The Savennières AOC was established by a decree dated December 8, 1952. The total area of the vineyards Savennières covers approximately 124 hectares, situated on the slopes running perpendicular to the Loire River, with excellent exposure. The shallow soils consist of sandstone schist, volcanic veins (rhyolites), and wind-blown sand. The mesoclimatic influence of the Loire allows for the production of highly mature dry white wines. Thus, thunderstorms most often pass over the left bank of the Loire, sparing Savennières. The wines of Savennières, all of which are white wines, are made from Chenin Blanc (or Pineau de la Loire). These wines can be aged anywhere from 5 years to indefinitely in exceptional vintages. Domaine aux Moines, Château Pierre-Bise, and Château de Varennes offer excellent wines that showcase the quality of the terroir of the Savennières. Within the Savennières appellation, there are two specific sub-appellations: La Roche-aux-Moines and La Coulée-de-Serrant. The La Coulée-de-Serrant vineyard was planted in the 12th century (1130) by Cistercian monks and has been under vine ever since. The quality of the wines from this vineyard has long been recognized and sets it apart from the others Savennières, a region that already enjoys a fine reputation. Maurice Constantin Weyer wrote about it, as did Alexandre Dumas, and more recently, in the early 20th century, Curnonsky—the prince of gastronomes—described it as one of the five best white wines in France. Today, La Roche-aux-Moines and La Coulée-de-Serrant are the appellations of the sole Coulée de Serrant - Nicolas Joly estate.

Savennières Wines

Appellation wines Savennières have a unique bouquet, aroma, and color in the world of wine. This white wine comes from Anjou. A grand cru region, it is home to many exceptional dry wines. It is one of the regions with the lowest yields in France. This is what makes this wine so special and gives it a distinctive flavor when tasted.

The main characteristics of Savennières wine

It has a fairly long shelf life, as it can be stored in a cellar at the right temperature for 10 to 20 years. The wine is made from a single grape variety Savennières is the Pineau of the Loire. That’s how you’ll recognize a true dry Savennières white wine.

What does Savennières wine taste like?

The pale yellow color of this dry white wine exhibits many nuances. In fact, it can range from greenish to golden hues. The greenish tint suggests the wine’s youth. A wine with this type of hue can be cellared for a while longer. The golden hue, on the other hand, suggests a hot vintage in which the grapes absorbed plenty of heat, resulting in a wine that is fruitier on the palate. The initial aroma generally evokes white flowers. The scent brings to mind acacia. Next come mineral notes. Sometimes, hints of linden and chamomile can be detected. After a few hours of aeration, ripe fruits and dried fruits emerge to perfume and dominate the tasting experience of this Savennières wine. The taste of this wine is all finesse and harmony. Well-balanced, it strikes a balance between smoothness and freshness on the palate. Delicacy is the very hallmark of wines from the Loire Valley. As you taste it, you’ll easily appreciate all the finesse of this type of wine. Captivated, you won’t be able to get enough of it.

What should you pair this type of wine with?

Easy to pair, this wine will complement your favorite dishes. You might also consider serving it with appetizers, andouillette, or fish dishes such as monkfish or plaice. It also pairs well with white meats like chicken or turkey.
