Bettane & Desseauve
4-Star-Rated Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
In Maury, Mas Amiel has 150 hectares of vineyards in production, spread across 132 plots, overlooked by the Cathar castle of Quéribus. Olivier Decelle (also owner of Château Jean Faure in Saint-Émilion) has acted as a patron, gradually restoring it to peak production condition, assisted in this effort since 2007 by Nicolas Raffy, who is deeply passionate about these lands. With the transition to biodynamic farming, the character of the wines will certainly continue to evolve in the years to come. While natural sweet wines have by no means been neglected, the focus has shifted toward producing very modern dry wines, with a broad range covering all styles. A must-visit destination!

Rated Estate (2024 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
Légende is a spicy blend with notes of candied cherry and fresh almond; on the palate, it is full-bodied and rich.
About the estate:
In the heart of the Maury region, at the foot of the hillside, stands a large estate with rows of demi-jeannes in which the wines age for a year in the sun before being transferred to the cask cellar for decades. Mas Amiel, the first estate in the Olivier Decelle family of wineries, is a chapter in the history of Roussillon. An estate that celebrates the tradition of great natural sweet wines, while also innovating with dry wines, featuring a refined, vibrant, and perfectly balanced style, rooted in a heritage of old vines. Nicolas Raffy, a talented Catalan winemaker, proudly champions wines made from calcoschist, black marl, and granite soils. He has identified steep plots and adapted his blends, aging methods, and harvest dates so that the dry Maury wines can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the VDNs at the very top. The estate is now undeniably among the leading names in the region. In recent years, the progress made with the dry wines has been spectacular. The third star is on the horizon.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on October 1, 2023
It took several years of patience for this sunny 2020 vintage to begin revealing its potential. Aromas of black fruit, intermingled with spices and notes of bay leaf and black olives, slowly but surely fill the palate with generosity and freshness. The dense, very ripe, and concentrated texture is underscored by a mineral, almost graphite-like backbone, supported by firm, structured, and velvety tannins. An intense finish that brings out an additional note of licorice. Excellent potential for aging. Surprisingly, this cuvée—which was still affordably priced at €18 just a year ago—is now much less so at nearly €25. Rating = 4. After two hours of aeration, this distinguished cuvée was paired with a local dish: veal sauté simmered Catalan-style on a bed of red rice. It would also pair well with pan-seared duck breast with blackcurrant sauce, served with celery purée.
