Duras Coast
The vineyards of the appellation Duras Coast  covers 1,500 hectares, with approximately 65% red and 35% white vineyards cultivated by 72 independent winemakers and 118 cooperative members. Located near the Bordeaux vineyards, this influence is evident in the grape varieties planted: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec for reds, and Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Muscadelle for whites. Its connection to the Southwest is evident in the other white grape varieties, such as Ondenc, Mauzac, and Ugni Blanc.

The subsoil of theDuras vineyard consists of marine and fluvial sediments, such as heavy, sticky clays known as “Boulbènes” in the lower and southern parts of the vineyard, and marl, molasse, limestone, and clay-limestone at higher elevations.

Although Duras is best known for its red wines, which make up the majority of its production, it turns out that the region also produces excellent white wines—and for good reason: the region’s molasse and boulbène subsoils are clearly well-suited to growing white grape varieties.
