Côtes de Gascogne
Côtes de Gascogne wines are produced in the Armagnac zone. The Côtes de Gascogne Protected Geographical Indication denomination requires compliance with rigorous production rules and standards, sanctioned by an official quality approval dating back to the decree of January 25, 1982. The Côtes de Gascogne PGI production zone covers the cantons of Auch, Cazaubon, Condom, Fleurance, Jegun, Lectoure, Montesquiou, Montréal, Nogaro, Riscle, Plaisance, Aignan, Valence-sur-Baïse and Vic-Fezensac.
The 11,700 hectares of the Côtes de Gascogne PGI appellation allow annual production of around 800,000 hectolitres of wine. The vineyards are planted in an oceanic climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, often stormy summers.
The Côtes de Gascogne occupy an atypical position in south-western France, an area that is predominantly devoted to red wine production, insofar as almost 90% of production is made up of white wines, the remainder being red or rosé. The white grape varieties used are Colombard, Ugni blanc, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay and Gros Manseng. Côtes de Gascogne PGI red and rosé wines are made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Tannat. Particularly noteworthy are wines from Domaine du Mage, Domaine Uby and the unmissable Domaine du Tariquet.
