Côtes de Gascogne
The wines of the Côtes de Gascogne are produced in the Armagnac region. The Côtes de Gascogne Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) requires compliance with strict production rules and standards, backed by an official quality certification established by the decree of January 25, 1982. The Côtes de Gascogne PGI production area covers the cantons of Auch, Cazaubon, Condom, Fleurance, Jegun, Lectoure, Montesquiou, Montréal, Nogaro, Riscle, Plaisance, Aignan, Valence-sur-Baïse, and Vic-Fezensac.
The approximately 11,700 hectares of the Côtes de Gascogne IGP appellation yield an annual production of around 800,000 hectoliters of wine. The vineyards are situated on a terroir that benefits from an oceanic climate with mild, humid winters and hot, but often stormy, summers.
The Côtes de Gascogne occupies a unique position in southwestern France, a region predominantly focused on red wine production, in that nearly 90% of its output consists of white wines, with the remainder being red or rosé wines. The white grape varieties used are Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay, and Gros Manseng. The Côtes de Gascogne IGP red and rosé wines are made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Tannat. Among these wines, those from Domaine du Mage, Domaine Uby, and the renowned Domaine du Tariquet stand out in particular.
