"An iron fist in a velvet glove!"

"Enthusiasm sums up the jury's discussions about this 100% Tannat wine. Aged in vats after delicate manual extraction to bring out the best without excess, this Madiran is nonetheless intense and dark, opening with powerful aromas of black cherry, plum, and spices. On the palate, the density of the velvety tannins is underscored by a striking freshness, promising length and solid aging potential. The whole concludes with an aromatic festival of ripe fruit and spices." (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2025)

About the estate:

Founded around 1850, this family estate has been passed down through six generations. Following in the footsteps of his father Louis, Didier Barré, who took over in 1983, contributed to the revival of Madiran, of which he was one of the standard-bearers. In 2017, sisters Claire and Marion Bortolussi (daughters of Alain Bortolussi of Ch. Viella) took over the reins of this flagship 25-hectare estate, forming a partnership with wine merchant Lionel Osmin to manage the estate and market its wines. The conversion to organic farming began in 2020.

Wine rating (2024 guide) 92/100 (Outstanding wine)

Rated Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About wine:

100% Tannat, the Aulet 2022 is more faithful to the spirit of Madiran than its counterpart Charles de Batz. It reveals a dense, complex, and balanced bouquet of violet, wild black berries, licorice, and blackberries, mixed with a subtle touch of oak. It is medium-bodied to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a fine, fleshy fruit core and structured tannins that assert themselves in a long, penetrating finish. Macerated for 30 days and aged for 16 months in barrels, this is a well-executed Madiran.

Rated Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)

About wine:

The Berthoumieu estate, located in the commune of Viella, in the heart of Madiran, produces a very structured wine. It has the solid, dry tannins of a young Tannat, with a rich black fruit base that will develop as it ages.
