"An iron fist in a velvet glove!"

“Enthusiasm pretty much sums up the jury’s discussions, which led them to award this 100% Tannat. Aged in tanks after a delicate manual extraction that draws out the best without going overboard, this Madiran is nonetheless intense and deep, opening with powerful aromas of black cherry, plum, and spices. On the palate, the velvety density of the tannins is underscored by a vibrant freshness, ensuring a long finish and solid aging potential. The wine concludes with an aromatic explosion of ripe fruit and spices.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2025)

Wine rated (2025 guide) 2* Editor's Choice

Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

“Enthusiasm” pretty much sums up the jury’s discussions, which led them to award this 100% Tannat. Aged in tanks following a delicate manual extraction that brings out the best without going overboard, this Madiran is nonetheless intense and deep, opening with powerful aromas of black cherry, plum, and spices. On the palate, the velvety density of the tannins is underscored by a vibrant freshness, ensuring a long finish and solid aging potential. The wine concludes with an aromatic explosion of ripe fruit and spices.

About the estate:

Founded around 1850, this family-owned estate has been passed down through six generations. Following in the footsteps of his father, Louis, Didier Barré, who took over in 1983, played a key role in the revival of Madiran, becoming one of its leading advocates. In 2017, sisters Claire and Marion Bortolussi (daughters of Alain Bortolussi of Château Viella) took the reins of this flagship 25-hectare estate by forming a partnership with wine merchant Lionel Osmin to manage the vineyard and market the wines. The transition to organic farming began in 2020.

Rated wine (2024 guide) 92/100 (Outstanding wine)

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Made from 100% Tannat, the 2022 Aulet is more true to the spirit of Madiran than its counterpart, Charles de Batz. It reveals a dense, complex, and balanced bouquet of violets, black wild berries, licorice, and blackberries, blended with a subtle hint of oak. It is medium-bodied to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a refined, fleshy fruit core and structured tannins that assert themselves in a long, penetrating finish. Macerated for 30 days and aged for 16 months in barrels, this is a well-crafted Madiran.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 93/100

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)

About the wine:

The Berthoumieu estate, located in the town of Viella, in the heart of Madiran, produces a very full-bodied wine. It features the firm, dry tannins of a young Tannat, set against a backdrop of rich black fruit flavors that will develop as the wine ages.
