About the wine:

The Sadie Family 2023 Swartland Columella is both fresh and intensely concentrated, offering complex aromas of black fruit and savory spices, along with impressive body and a beautifully full-bodied mid-palate. Sourced from several Swartland vineyards located in Paardeberg, Kasteelberg, Malmesbury, and Piketberg, this wine is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Tinta Barroca, aged for over 24 months to deliver a harmonious expression of the region. The complex mix of schist, granite, limestone, alluvial clay, and sandstone underscores Columella’s identity as a true benchmark of the Swartland region. Despite challenges posed by cloudy weather, winemaker Eben Sadie asserts that 2023 is one of his most satisfying vintages. 2027–2048

The 2023 Columella is the usual blend of seven grape varieties. It has a fairly intense bouquet, with notes of red and black fruits, a cigar box, potpourri, and a slight hint of the sea. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with fine tannins, a smooth mouthfeel, good balance, and a long, velvety finish. This Columella offers wonderful clarity that will provide many years of drinking pleasure. It is right up there with the best wines produced by Sadie. 2028–2050
