Swartland
Swartland means "Black Earth" in Afrikaans ("Swart" for black and "Land" for earth), in reference to the hills where dark bushes grow in the region.

This is one of South Africa's oldest vineyards. Eben Sadie settled here in 1997, and has contributed to the renown of the Swartland appellation and South Africa as a whole.

The climate is hot and dry, with soils composed of granite, schist and sand.

For white grapes, Chenin Blanc and Colombard (on a smaller scale) are predominantly grown. For red grapes, Syrah is the dominant variety. Cabernet sauvignon, cinsault and pinotage are also found.

The Swartland Revolution festival is held here every November, along with various wine events and trade fairs.
