Attractive nose of fresh fruit, complex (pineapple, nectarine, peach, apricot), with a touch of minerality characteristic of the vintage, radiant. On the palate, a gentle balance coupled with powerful acidity, with vanilla nuances from the soil enhancing its charm. However, it needs time to fully appreciate its minerality on the palate.

About the estate:

While Jean-Michel Deiss spends a lot of time in his vineyards, it is his son Mathieu who is in charge of winemaking. An engaging winemaker, his sensitivity is evident in the evolution of the wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs, which are more delicate and refined with each vintage. In the whites, maceration trials give thickness and depth to the textures on the palate. A winemaker-entrepreneur, Mathieu has expanded the vineyard from 27 to 45 hectares, including his Vignoble du Rêveur project, which he runs with his partner Emmanuelle Milan. Since 2020, two hectares have been dedicated to the production of vine plants and the estate has acquired its own planting machine, reinforcing its autonomy and control over all aspects of the winegrowing profession.

Made from at least 60% Riesling, the 2019 Altenberg Grand Cru is very clear, deep, pure, and aromatic on the nose, offering notes of ripe peach and fine botrytis with aromas of ripe apricot. Smooth and rich but very refined on the very elegant and salty finish, this Altenberg resembles a Mosel Auslese with a gold cap but with more tannins and less sulfur. It is an impressive wine to serve with cheese, for example. Very stimulating on clay and marl soils with decomposed limestone. Immaculate. 12.3% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in May 2022.

About the estate:

Mathieu Deiss has succeeded his father Jean-Michel at the helm of this venerable Bergheim estate. Mixed planting remains the guiding principle, even for the grands crus. Although the process is ancestral in the region, it is still rarely practiced and strongly divides winegrowers. The Deiss family continues to push the boundaries of this approach, producing compelling, complex wines with wonderful intensity of flavor and incredible balance. Mathieu has also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from his mother's vineyards in Bennwihr (where he produces high-quality orange wines, among other things). The wines are unusual for the region, which is a little confusing for consumers, but the result is magnificent. Striking nose of toasted rye bread, forest honey, candied orange, and dried Persian lemon. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet graceful, with tremendous concentration and spice. There must be some natural sweetness from the grapes, but it is lost in the cavernous space of this astonishing wine. It is just beginning to reveal its depth in the gigantic and incredibly complex finish. A blend of traditional grape varieties, with a focus on Riesling. Golden color. Intense bouquet marked by hints of saffron, roasted pineapple, ripe mangoes, and passion fruit. It even reveals some root notes. On the palate, the wine is rich, charming, and tense.
