"Such grandeur and depth in a generous and flavorful context." (Yves Beck)

"Its incredible concentration, precision, and unwavering vitality make this an astonishing Schlossberg Grand Cru. I wish I could buy grapefruits and pomelos with such intensity. At the heart of this wine is an astonishing salinity that will either blow you away or make you look away. What an incredible mineral finish, where the fine tannins are almost perfectly integrated." (James Suckling 2025)

Wine rated (2026 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2023 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)

About the estate:

While Jean-Michel Deiss spends a lot of time in his vineyards, it is his son Mathieu who is in charge of winemaking. An engaging winemaker, his sensitivity is evident in the evolution of the wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs, which are more delicate and refined with each vintage. In the whites, maceration trials give thickness and depth to the textures on the palate. A winemaker-entrepreneur, Mathieu has expanded the vineyard from 27 to 45 hectares, including his Vignoble du Rêveur project, which he runs with his partner Emmanuelle Milan. Since 2020, two hectares have been dedicated to the production of vine plants and the estate has acquired its own planting machine, reinforcing its autonomy and control over all aspects of the winegrowing profession.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100 (Extraordinary wine)

About wine:

The 2022 Schlossberg Grand Cru, golden yellow in color, is very intense and concentrated, with an elegant, floral, and finely mineral nose. Rich and round on the palate, this is a concentrated, very intense, and mineral Schlossberg Riesling, with fine tannins and a long, intense, substantial, and saline finish. Bottled in August 2023, it is already a surprisingly accessible Riesling. 13.5% alcohol declared with less than four grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in April 2024.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 97/100

Rated estate (2024 guide) 4 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)

About wine:

Equally luminous, Schlossberg expresses itself with fullness and softness of texture: very rich, salty, and sappy, it projects its radiant length in an endless, soothing breath.

About the estate:

Mathieu Deiss has succeeded his father Jean-Michel at the helm of this venerable Bergheim estate. Mixed planting remains the guiding principle, even for the grands crus. Although the process is ancestral in the region, it is still rarely practiced and strongly divides winegrowers. The Deiss family continues to push the boundaries of this approach, producing compelling, complex wines with wonderful intensity of flavor and incredible balance. Mathieu has also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from his mother's vineyards in Bennwihr (where he produces high-quality orange wines, among other things). The wines are unusual for the region, which is a little confusing for consumers, but the result is magnificent. A few years' hindsight allows us to analyze the precision of the terroir definitions and the ability of these wines to manage their own balance. Discover the estate's unique geo-sensory tasting experience, which allows you to understand the relationship between the characteristics of the wine and the terroir where it was born.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Recommended

About wine:

The Schlossberg Grand Cru 2022 is a blend of grape varieties composed mainly of Riesling, with a little Pinot Gris and Muscat, planted in one of the driest parts of the Schlossberg and Deiss, which highlights the fact that the grape varieties in the blends are not chosen for their taste profile, but for the profile of the terroir. The nose has a delicate note of orange peel, immediately accompanied by a magnificent touch of lemon balm and mandarin, making for a most seductive bouquet. The palate strikes with the immediate clarity of its mineral notes, its precision and discreet power. It is direct, naked and magnificent, with just a little more generosity on the finish. It rises like a Gothic turret. (Very dry)

Wine rated (2025 guide) 97/100

About wine:

The complex bouquet of this Schlossberg Grand Cru reveals notes combining minerality, maturity, generosity, and authenticity. It stands out for its crystalline character! On the palate, the fullness displayed from the outset is exciting, challenging, and reassuring. Such grandeur and depth in a generous and sapid context. This is a wine that plays on many registers with the sole ambition of sublimating this great terroir, without seeking to seduce... it prefers to convince. This may be almost the same thing, but it is more relevant! 2028-2048 97/100
