“‘What grandeur and depth in such a rich and flavorful context.’ (Yves Beck)”

“Its incredible concentration, precision, and unwavering vitality make this an astonishing Schlossberg Grand Cru. I wish I could buy grapefruits and pomelos with such intensity. At the heart of this wine lies a striking salinity that will either blow you away or make you look away. What an incredible mineral finish, where the fine tannins are almost perfectly integrated.” (James Suckling 2025)

Wine rated (2026 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2023 guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

While Jean-Michel Deiss spends a great deal of time in his vineyards, it is his son Mathieu who oversees the winemaking process. A charming winemaker, his sensitivity is evident in the evolution of the wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs, which become more delicate and refined with each vintage. For the whites, experiments with maceration lend depth and richness to the textures on the palate. As a winemaker-entrepreneur, Mathieu has expanded the vineyard from 27 to 45 hectares, including his Vignoble du Rêveur project, which he runs with his partner Emmanuelle Milan. Since 2020, two hectares have been dedicated to the production of grapevines, and the estate has acquired its own planting machine, strengthening its autonomy and mastery of all aspects of the winemaking craft.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100 (Extraordinary wine)

About the wine:

The 2022 Schlossberg Grand Cru, with its golden-yellow color, is very intense and concentrated, with an elegant, floral, and subtly mineral nose. Rich and round on the palate, this is a concentrated, highly intense, and mineral-driven Schlossberg Riesling, featuring fine tannins and a long, intense, substantial, and salty finish. Bottled in August 2023, it is already a surprisingly approachable Riesling. 13.5% alcohol by volume with less than four grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the winery in April 2024.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 97/100

Rated estate (2024 guide) 4*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

Equally radiant, the Schlossberg expresses itself with fullness and a smooth texture: rich, briny, and savory, it projects its radiant finish in an endless, soothing surge.

About the estate:

Mathieu Deiss has taken over from his father, Jean-Michel, at the helm of this venerable estate in Bergheim. Mixed planting remains the guiding principle, even for the grand cru wines. Although the practice is a time-honored tradition in the region, it is rarely followed today and remains a source of strong division among winemakers. The Deiss family continues to push the boundaries of this approach, producing compelling, complex wines with marvelous intensity of flavor and incredible balance. Mathieu has also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from his mother’s vineyards in Bennwihr (where he produces, notably, top-tier orange wines). The wines are exceptional for the region, which can be a bit confusing for the consumer, but the result is magnificent. A few years of hindsight allow us to analyze the precision of the terroir definitions and these wines’ ability to maintain their own balance. Don’t miss the estate’s unique geo-sensory tasting experience, which helps you understand the relationship between the wine’s characteristics and the terroir where it was born.

Rated winery (2023 guide) Recommended

About the wine:

The Schlossberg Grand Cru 2022 is a blend composed primarily of Riesling, with a touch of Pinot Gris and Muscat, planted in one of the driest sections of the Schlossberg and Deiss, underscoring the fact that the grapes in the blend are not selected based on their flavor profile, but rather on the terroir’s characteristics. The nose offers a delicate note of orange peel, immediately accompanied by a magnificent touch of lemon balm and mandarin—a most seductive bouquet. The palate strikes with the immediate clarity of its mineral notes, its precision, and its discreet power. It is direct, unadorned, and magnificent, with just a touch more generosity on the finish. It rises like a Gothic turret. (Very dry)

Wine rated (2025 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

Complex, the bouquet of this Schlossberg Grand Cru reveals notes that blend minerality, ripeness, richness, and authenticity. It stands out for its crystalline character! On the palate, the fullness evident from the very first sip is exhilarating, bold, and reassuring. Such grandeur and depth within a rich and savory profile. A wine that plays on many registers, with the sole ambition of elevating this great terroir—not merely to seduce, but to convince. It’s certainly almost the same thing, but it’s more meaningful! 2028–2048 97/100
