“A fine Riesling”

“Remarkable citrus notes, a full-bodied structure, and excellent concentration paired with vibrant acidity make this a highly expressive and appealing dry Riesling—one that delivers everything people expect from Sancerre, which it doesn’t always do. A long, invigorating finish.” (James Suckling 2023). A wonderful wine to discover the world of Olivier Humbrecht!

Rated estate (2024 guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

For three decades, this estate has been a model of Alsatian viticulture, telling the story of the Humbrecht family. Léonard, the founder, was a visionary who acquired the region’s finest terroirs, including the famous Rangen. His son, Olivier, brilliantly introduced the principles of biodynamics as early as the 1990s. And today, Pierre-Émile, who joined the estate during the very challenging 2021 vintage, continues their legacy, particularly with the latest acquisitions on the Sommerberg.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 4*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the estate:

An tireless ambassador for his wines and the region, Olivier Humbrecht—the first Frenchman to earn the title of Master of Wine—has long understood the importance of vineyard work. He converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 1999 and is one of its leading advocates, serving as president of the Biodyvin label. This approach has allowed him to avoid botrytis and reduce alcohol levels. The wines have evolved over the years and now exhibit a decidedly dry style, with the large casks aging them several meters underground. Like all great Alsace wines, they reach their full potential after a few years or decades of aging. The Clos Windsbuhl is a must-try, and the Rangen de Thann grows in prominence with time. Pierre-Emile, Olivier’s son, has just joined the estate. The excellence of this production, respected by all, allows this iconic property to enter the pantheon of our guide with a fourth star.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 90/100

About the wine:

The 2021 Riesling Roche Roulée comes from plots located around the flattest parts of Turckheim, which feature many large, round pebbles known as "galets"; these are glacial deposits with a bit of clay on well-drained soils. The nose is wonderfully flinty with a promising hint of reduction. The palate is dry, rather serene and round. Subtle aromas of sun-ripened mirabelle plum skin emerge on the mid-palate, then fade to give way to a long, lemony, taut finish. The dry-to-the-bone lemon zest has a long echo. (Dry to the bone)

Striking citrus notes, a full-bodied structure, and excellent concentration paired with vibrant acidity make this a highly expressive and appealing dry Riesling—one that delivers everything people expect from Sancerre, which doesn’t always happen. A long, invigorating finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Ready to drink now or for aging.
