Clos-Saint-Urbain (named after the little chapel in the middle of the vineyard) 2023 shines from the first nose with intense aromas of smoke, burnt peat and toast. Domaine rated (guide 2024) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and the world)
About the domain :
For three decades one of the models of Alsatian viticulture, this estate tells the story of the Humbrecht family. Léonard, the founder, was a visionary who acquired the best terroirs in the region, including the famous Rangen. Olivier, his son, brilliantly introduced biodynamic principles in the 1990s. And today, Pierre-Émile, who arrived at the domaine with the very complicated 2021 vintage, and who is continuing their work, particularly on the latest Sommerberg acquisitions.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 100/100
Domaine rated (guide 2024) 4*Stars (They represent the excellence of the French vineyard. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wines is always a magical experience)
About the wine:
The Rangen trilogy touches on the sublime: [...] The masterful Pinot Gris is enveloping and smoky, all restrained power, inhabited by an inner volcanic fire: in our opinion, the greatest Alsatian expression of this grape variety.
About the domain :
A tireless ambassador for his wines and the region, Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the Master of Wine degree, has long understood the importance of work in the vineyard. He converted the estate to biodynamic viticulture in 1999, of which he is one of the best ambassadors, being also president of the Biodyvin label. This type of cultivation has enabled him to get rid of botrytis and reduce alcohol levels. The wines have evolved over the years and now assert a resolutely dry style, and the large tuns patinate them several meters underground. Like all great Alsace wines, they come into their own after a few years or decades of cellaring. Clos Windsbuhl is a must-have, and Rangen de Thann takes its place over time. Pierre-Emile, the son of Pierre-Emile, the son of Olivier, has just joined the domaine. The excellence of this production, respected by all, has earned this emblematic estate a fourth star in our guide's pantheon.

About the wine:
The Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru 2023 has a vibrant, reduced nose, with a delicious mineral scent of nettle. A magnificent wine. On aeration, it reveals an aroma of ripe pear, but everything remains imbued with this lively freshness. The palate is omnipresent, lively, uncluttered and incisive, totally different from any other Pinot Gris. It has lovely cut, minerality, verve and immense energy, with a long, resolutely citric finish. The 2023 is incredible. (Very dry)

About the wine:
The striking concentration, smoky notes and mineral energy of this unique dry pinot gris don't fit into any known category. It's certainly not full-bodied, but how could it be described as medium-bodied with such intensity of expression? Despite its power, it soars almost weightlessly to the heavens, taking you with it. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. It can be drunk now, but will be at its best from 2027.
