Château de Fontenille
In the 4th century, the Fontenille estate in the Entre-deux-Mers region—then consisting of a Roman villa—already had vineyards. Affiliated with the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure until the 17th century, the estate has been managed by Stéphane Defraine since 1989.
At the helm of 56 hectares of vineyards—20 planted with white grapes and 36 with red—currently in the process of converting to organic farming, Stéphane Defraine, along with his wife and daughter, considers the Château de Fontenille vineyard a jewel: Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, Petit Verdot, Malbec…
With 67 plots covering 63 hectares, spread across five clusters, the three of them have plenty of options and enjoy creating diverse profiles for their wines. They love to combine soils, grape varieties, and vineyard management techniques. Whether silty gravel, stony gravel, or clay-gravel, these soils embody the character of Entre-deux-Mers and gain in intensity as they move toward Cadillac, resulting in increasingly rich and meticulously crafted wines across the Bordeaux, Entre-deux-Mers, Cadillac, and Clairet appellations...
