Everything you need to know about Bouzeron wines
The Burgundy vineyards have small areas of vines whose appellation produces exceptional wines. Located in the Côte Chalonnaise, Bouzeron is a prime example. Bouzeron is a Burgundy white wine with character. Discover this typical wine produced by 25 passionate growers.
The Bouzeron appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC)
Bouzeron became an AOC white wine in 1997 under the impetus of Aubert de Vilaine, co-manager of the famous Romanée Conti estate. This appellation is produced north of Saône-et-Loire in two administrative communes, Chassey-le-Champ and Bouzeron, separated by the Dheune valley. Bouzeron is produced exclusively from Aligoté grapes grown on 52 hectares of clay-limestone hillsides. These vineyards are cultivated by 25 dedicated winegrowers who are proud to be reviving a long-forgotten grape variety by producing a wine with a delicate expression.
The Bouzeron grape variety
The Aligoté grape variety originates from Burgundy and is characterized by a blend of Gouais blanc, now extinct, and Pinot noir. It is a very old variety dating back to the 17th century. Aligoté is exclusively used in the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation. In Burgundy, it is the second most widely planted grape variety after Chardonnay. Aligoté now accounts for 6% of Burgundy's white grape varieties. It is very vigorous and fairly resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew. This Burgundy grape variety is increasingly appreciated by consumers, after having been neglected for a long time. Thanks to their remarkable work, today's winemakers at this estate have managed to restore its image and make this appellation a benchmark AOC and a white wine loved by enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Bouzeron terroir and wines
Bouzeron is grown on well-drained white marl limestone hillsides. The vines thrive in this mixture of clay and limestone soils, which ensures moisture levels and helps retain the sun's heat. This terroir is located between 270 and 350 meters above sea level. The vineyard slopes face east and southeast. The continental climate is favorable for vines, with hot summers and cold winters without late frosts, and variable rainfall throughout the year. The Bouzeron vineyard is pruned using the gobelet method. This pruning technique dates back to Roman times. It involves forming between two and five arms from the central stem, which helps to control yields and aerate the bunches. The ripening grapes are large and the white berries tend to be orange in color. They can be recognized by the brown spots on part of the berry.
Food and wine pairings for Bouzeron white wine
Pleasant on the palate, AOC Aligoté is a perfect accompaniment to every course of a meal, from aperitifs and starters to main dishes and cheeses. Bouzeron is best enjoyed young and well chilled with unique dishes such as tapas, seafood, fish, white meats, charcuterie platters, omelets, goat cheese, or Comté cheese. A pleasure for the nose and the taste buds. As usual, everyone is free to form their own opinion on the subject. We bet that the delicate fruit notes of Bouzeron will not leave you indifferent.
