Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

A long-established family in Chablis, the Michels cultivate the finest vineyards, both Premier Cru and Grand Cru. The estate is also one of the very few to offer the Grenouilles grand cru, of which La Chablisienne remains the primary producer. Since 1969, winemaking has been carried out in stainless steel tanks, so the wines here often start out quietly in the bottle, but their minerality comes through effortlessly after a few years of aging.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

The nose is complex, with body and concentration on the palate, as well as lively acidity, all combined with ripe fruit and mineral notes on the finish. It has just been bottled, but it’s already quite lovely. Winery manager Guillaume Michel notes that his Montée de Tonnerre is made entirely from Chapelot. It comes from a homogeneous, south-facing plot that extends from the lower part of Chapelot up to the mid-slope.

About the wine:

The Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru 2022 offers an appealing bouquet with hints of frangipane that blend with citrus and notes of dried orange peel. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture. Well-defined, fairly briny, with a hint of tart lemon that blends into a subtle note of hazelnut and smoke. One of Louis Michel’s finest Premier Crus.
