Calatayud
The Calatayud designation of origin is located in the southeast of the province of Aragon and takes its name from a small village that is emblematic of the region. The appellation covers 46 municipalities and a total area of more than 5,600 hectares. The Calatayud DO was granted in 1989.
The vineyards of Calatayud enjoy mainly limestone soils, composed of mountain scree and red agiles. The continental climate produces significant daily temperature variations and relatively moderate rainfall, resulting in water stress that is favorable to grape quality. The work of producers such as Bodegas San Alejandro and Bodegas Claraval allows the terroir to fully express itself in high-quality Calatayud wines.
TheCalatayud wine terroir allows its red wines to be made from grape varieties that mainly include Grenache (Garnacha Tinto), Tempranillo, Maccabeu, Monastrell, Mazuela, Merlot, and Syrah. Calatayud white wines are made from Macabeu, Malvasia, Moscatel de Alejandria, Garnacha Blanca, and Chardonnay grapes.
