Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 91/100 (2021 vintage)
Rated estate (2025 guide) 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable vintage, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Following in the footsteps of Bernard Durand, who oversaw Pic Saint-Loup’s transition from a mixed-farming operation focused on sheep to its recognition as a quality wine-growing region, his nephew Régis Valentin has taken over the technical reins. Without fanfare, this is an estate worth seeking out for its Vieilles Vignes cuvée—powerful yet flavorful—its Clos des Combes, and its Grande Cuvée. The Cuvée Madame is even more ambitious, and the rosé is consistently delicious.

About the estate:
Régis Valentin, an oenologist and cellar master, took over the estate in 2001, which was founded in 1960 by the Durand-Valentin families. He produces wines from 80 hectares of vineyards (in the process of converting to organic farming since 2019) situated on a beautiful terroir of hard limestone and red clay. A sure bet in the Languedoc.

Distinctive and full-bodied, this cuvée offers a rich array of notes of sweet spices, slightly bitter cocoa, and coffee, enhanced by succulent flavors of stewed cherries and blackcurrant. This rich blend translates to a palate that is opulent, full-bodied, and lively, supported by pronounced, well-integrated, and deep tannins. A subtle, slightly earthy smoothness lends softness to the texture, while a hint of graphite brings a very pleasant freshness. The warm finish seals the deal with its notes of licorice. Young and promising. Very reasonable price. The powerful, savory, and dynamic style of this Pic makes it an ideal companion to a venison stew à la forestière with fresh porcini mushrooms from Lozère and tagliatelle. Rating - 4.2.
