Wine rated 91/100 (2021 vintage)

Rated estate (2025 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Following in the footsteps of Bernard Durand—who oversaw the transformation of Pic Saint-Loup from a mixed-farming operation focused on sheep to a recognized quality wine-growing region—his nephew, Régis Valentin, has taken over the technical reins. Without fanfare, this is an estate worth seeking out for its Vieilles Vignes cuvée—powerful yet flavorful—as well as its Clos des Combes and Grande Cuvée. The Cuvée Madame is even more ambitious, and the rosé is consistently delicious.

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2025) 2* Stars (Vintage 2021) (Remarkable wine)

Rated Estate (2025 Guide) Award-Winning Wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

Régis Valentin, an oenologist and cellar master, took over the estate in 2001, which had been founded in 1960 by the Durand-Valentin families. He produces wines from 80 hectares of vineyards (in the process of converting to organic farming since 2019) situated on a beautiful terroir of hard limestone and red clay. A sure bet in the Languedoc.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 10/27/2024

Distinctive and full-bodied, this cuvée offers a wealth of notes of sweet spices, slightly bitter cocoa, and coffee, enhanced by succulent flavors of stewed cherries and blackcurrant. This rich blend translates to an opulent, full-bodied, and lively palate, supported by pronounced, well-integrated, and deep tannins. A subtle, slightly earthy creaminess lends smoothness to the texture, while a hint of graphite adds a very pleasant freshness. The warm finish is thoroughly convincing with its notes of licorice. Young and promising. Very reasonably priced. The powerful, savory, and dynamic style of this Pic makes it an ideal pairing for a venison stew à la forestière with fresh porcini mushrooms from Lozère and tagliatelle. Rating: 4.2.
