Domaine Grand Veneur - Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines 2020

James Suckling
“Probably the most modern wine in the lineup, Les Origines 2020 is made from 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the remainder Syrah. It is fully destemmed and aged for 16 months in equal parts new oak barrels and concrete tanks. It reflects its aging with a hint of spicy oak, but displays classic southern Rhône notes of black raspberries, blackcurrant, licorice, pepper, and cured meats. Medium- to full-bodied, balanced, and nicely concentrated, this is a beautiful wine that will benefit from 2 to 3 years of aging and will age well until 2035.” (Jeb Dunnuck 2022)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to expectations for its appellation(s))
About the estate:
A leading figure in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel, Alain Jaume runs a family-owned business focused on high-quality wine trading as well as their own exceptional vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Côtes du Rhône. Their greatest source of pride is the Vin du Grand-Veneur, a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Clos de Sixte, the family estate located in Tavel, offers a fine representation of the terroir, while in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the old-vine cuvée ranks among the appellation’s finest wines. The estate’s future is brilliantly secured by Alain Jaume’s children.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)
About the estate:
Originally from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Alain Jaume and his sons, Sébastien and Christophe, carry on a winemaking tradition that dates back to 1826. They cultivate a 155-hectare vineyard organically, spread across four estates: Grand Veneur in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos de Sixte in Lirac, Ch. Mazane in Vacqueyras, and Dom. la Grangette Saint-Joseph in the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC, all complemented by a wine merchant business. A sure bet.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
4-star estate (Very high-quality production)
About the estate:
In the Jaume family, we have been winemakers "...ever since Mathieu Jaume decided to plant vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1826." Odile and Alain Jaume and their sons, Christophe and Sébastien, now manage a 70-hectare vineyard (Domaine Grand Veneur, Clos de Sixte) that also produces wines under the Lirac and Côtes du Rhône appellations. As expected, Grenache Noir and Syrah dominate the vineyard’s grape varieties. The estate began the transition to organic farming in 2009.

James Suckling
Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100
About the wine:
The immense nose of violet candies, blackberries, smoked bacon, and a hint of warm asphalt leads us to an expansive yet beautifully balanced Châteauneuf, with fine, powdery tannins. It has so much character, with notes of dark chocolate, yet this perfectly complements the deep fruit and builds toward a long, crescendo-like finish, with fascinating hints of balsamic and warm, dry earth. Enjoy it now, but it will be at its best starting in 2025.
