Montagne-Saint-Emilion
Montagne Saint-Émilion is a red wine with a distinguished character. It possesses very appealing qualities.
Montagne Saint-Émilion wine has a ruby color with various dark hues.
The distinguished character of the Montagne-Saint-Émilion brandy is evident in its aromas. In fact, upon opening the bottle, one is greeted by aromas composed primarily of red berries, cherry, forest floor, bell pepper, blackberry, prune, blackcurrant, and licorice. One can even detect surprising scents of candied fruit, such as notes of roasted coffee and chocolate, derived from aging in oak barrels.
This is a distinguished, elegant, full-bodied, warm, generous, and rich wine, much like Château La Chapelle or Château Gachon.

If you think these are the only flavors you’ll experience with the Montagne Saint-Émilion, think again. As you continue tasting, you’ll be taken by surprise by its powerful, ripe tannins. The finish also stands out for its freshness, pronounced fruitiness, and lingering aftertaste. As you’ve likely gathered, Montagne Saint-Émilion is a vintage you absolutely must not miss out on.

The origins of Montagne Saint-Émilion wine

Roman monuments and ruins bear witness to a rich history and ancient winemaking traditions in the Saint-Émilion region. After the barbarian invasions brought winemaking to a standstill, it was not until the Middle Ages that viticulture once again flourished. The Montagne-Saint-Émilion vineyard has held an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) designation since a decree issued on November 14, 1936. The Montagne-Saint-Émilion appellation covers the territory of the commune of Montagne and the hamlets of Parsac and Saint-Georges. The 1,450 hectares of vineyards in the Montagne-Saint-Émilion appellation yield an annual wine production of nearly 70,000 hectoliters.

To the north and northeast of the Saint-Émilion hill, the Montagne-Saint-Émilion wine region consists mainly of limestone or clay-limestone soil. Some areas, however, are gravelly or sandy. The entire area rests on a thick, porous layer of asterian limestone (crustacean microfossils dating back to the Mesozoic Era). During the summer drought, this limestone supplies the soil with water through capillary action. The Montagne-Saint-Émilion vineyard benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, with regular rainfall and significant sunshine and summer heat. “Indian summers” allow the grapes to ripen well.

Montagne-Saint-Émilion wines are primarily blended from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which account for 60% and 30% of the vineyard plantings, respectively. Montagne-Saint-Émilion wines feature intense aromas of red fruit, forest floor, and cherry, as well as bell pepper, blackberry, and licorice. On the palate, they are full-bodied, warm, balanced, and robust. These are powerful, elegant, generous, and always distinguished wines, such as Château Gachon or Château La Chapelle.

How is Montagne Saint-Émilion wine made?

Montagne-Saint-Émilion wine is the flagship wine of this French commune. It is grown on limestone or clay-limestone soil. During dry spells, the limestone supplies the soil with water through capillary action. The rest of the time, the Montagne-Saint-Émilion vineyards benefit from a temperate oceanic climate with regular rainfall and optimal sunshine.

This promotes proper ripening of the grapes. Generally speaking, Montagne-Saint-Émilion wines are blended from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which account for 60% and 30% of the vineyard plantings, respectively. The wine is then aged naturally until it develops the body, aromas, and flavors that delight all the senses.
