“The nose is subtle, with notes of kirsch. On the palate, it is rich, fruity, and velvety. The full-bodied character of this cuvée pairs beautifully with whipped cream topped with red berries or, for a different take, Basque cheese served with black cherries.” (Gault & Millau Guide) This rosé Champagne is produced using the Brut Sélection as a base, to which 12% of red Bouzy—a Grand Cru from the Coteaux Champenois—is added. Enjoy it with fruit-based desserts.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Located on the hills above Épernay, the Janisson-Baradon estate is run by Richard Janisson and his two sons, Maxence and Cyril. The vineyard comprises 9 hectares of hillsides surrounding the Champagne capital, tended with care and attention. The Janissons have intelligently modernized the style of their wines, and once again this year, the single-vineyard selections stood out during the tasting, with champagnes of assertive character that retain the region’s characteristic suppleness. A sure bet.

Rated 1*Star (High-quality production)

About the wine:

The nose is subtle, with hints of kirsch. On the palate, it is rich, fruity, full-bodied, and velvety. The richness of this wine pairs beautifully with whipped cream topped with red berries or, for a different take, Basque cheese served with black cherries.

About the estate:

Founded in 1922 by Georges Baradon, a wine-stirrer, and his son-in-law, Maurice Janisson, a cooper, the estate is still run by the Janisson family, who cultivate just over 9 hectares of vineyards on the western slopes of Épernay, in Chouilly and Brimont. The vineyard has been maintained through soil cultivation since 1997, without the use of any herbicides. Most of the vintages are a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

A delight for ladies...and young ladies. A subtle, slightly oxidized nose. BSA, with a clean attack, featuring fruit—the Pinot has a hint of strawberry—and the roundness imparted by malolactic fermentation. Its full-bodied, vinous character is tempered by a touch of salinity and a hint of bitterness on the finish. Best enjoyed soon. Served at 10°C, this brut rosé, perfect as an aperitif, made quite an impression when paired with a strawberry and white chocolate log. Score = 3.6.

As it ages, the wine develops a rather pronounced, woody character, somewhat reminiscent of Savagnin. A beautiful, long structure perfectly complements the nose. It's lovely.

"A true winemaker's Champagne" I haven't tasted it yet, but just to point out: NM stands for "Négociant manipulant"—that's not a winemaker! I've had it; it's a decent Champagne
