Bettane & Desseauve

(2016 Vintage Notes)

This bottle pays tribute to Alain Chabanon’s maternal family; it is a cuvée with an intense, highly aromatic bouquet, deliciously fruity, and exceptionally fresh. A fine expression of the estate’s terroirs, with their poor, stony soils...

Wine rated 16/20 (2016 vintage) (Very good wine)

Winery rated 1 star (A high-quality, recommended wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Settled in Montpeyroux in 1992, after stints at Château Montus and in Corsica, Alain Chabanon also cultivates plots in Jonquières, Saint-André, Lagamas, and Saint-Saturnin. A pioneer among organic winemakers, Alain is one of the most refined and engaging. Some of his wines were occasionally controversial in the past, but magnificent recent upgrades have allowed him to take a significant step forward. The aging process, which was still somewhat visible, will evolve considerably with the switch to large oak casks instead of barrels. Concrete eggs for the Mourvèdre have contributed to a greater freshness. This added body in the wines will allow the estate to compete in a higher category.

About the estate:

The son of teachers and an oenologist, Alain Chabanon acquired vineyards in 1992 in Montpeyroux and the surrounding villages. He built his cellar in the middle of his vineyard (17 ha) which is cultivated organically (certified in 2002) and biodynamically (2011).

Wine rated 15.5/20 (2016 vintage) (Good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

Alain Chabanon settled near Montpeyroux in 1992 after honing his skills with Alain Brumont in Madiran and Count Peraldi on the island of Corsica. A dedicated and inspired winemaker, he quickly distinguished himself through hard work in the vineyard and strong convictions in his viticultural choices, blending, and aging. Patience is key for these unadorned and highly expressive wines, which are aged in stainless steel, concrete eggs, or large oak casks and bottled late, after they have matured. The overall impression is accurate and precise, with exemplary management of terroir expression and ripeness. We commend the work accomplished and the distinctive personality of each wine.
