Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2021 guide) 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable vintage, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Tucked away at the foot of the north face of the Alpilles, in a magical and spectacular setting worthy of a James Bond film, this 58-hectare estate is now owned by the Charmolüe family, former owners of Château Montrose, a Saint-Estèphe Cru Classé. Cultivated in harmony with nature, the vineyard operates on a biodynamic rhythm; the wines’ evolution is clearly perceptible and their purity undeniable. Since 2018, a brand-new winery has complemented the spectacular historic facility, enabling the wines to continue their development.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)
About the estate:
Former owners of Château Montrose, a Saint-Estèphe classified growth, Anne-Marie and Jean-Louis Charmolüe acquired this vast estate (250 hectares) with a rich history in 2006; it is located in the heart of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The vineyard covers 58 hectares, cultivated using biodynamic methods since 1988, and the wines are aged in a monumental cellar, carved into the rock and designed like a Gothic cathedral.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
3-star rated estate (High-quality production)
About the estate:
Nestled in the heart of the Alpilles, this estate of just over 60 hectares is home to a variety of red grape varieties (Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, etc.) and white varieties (Rolle, etc.), some native to the Mediterranean region and others not (Cabernet Sauvignon), all cultivated using biodynamic methods. The grapes are vinified in a rather unique setting: an underground cathedral. The estate, acquired in 2006 by Jean-Louis Charmolüe (Château Montrose, in Saint-Estèphe), benefits from the guidance of Bordeaux-based oenologist Denis Dubourdieu.
