Rated estate (2022 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Céline and Isabelle Meyer manage the estate—long led by their father Jean—with courage and discipline. Their biodynamic wines shine with their light, refined, fresh, and crisp profiles. The estate’s two flagship grands crus are the Hengst and the Brand, where the Riesling truly shines. Pinot Gris is part of a long tradition of dry wine, which is, unfortunately, not so common in Alsace.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 93+/100 (Outstanding wine)

About the wine:

Harvested on October 4 from the three plots located at the summit of the vineyard, the 2019 Hengst Riesling Samain Grand Cru fermented for three months and aged for an additional five months before being bottled in late June. While the standard Hengst focuses on the soil, the Samain focuses on altitude (or “the sky,” as Isabelle puts it). The nose is very clear, fresh, and ethereal in its lemony terroir expression. Sumptuous and round on the palate, this is an intense Hengst, ripe and briny on the finish, with remarkable precision, finesse, and elegance. It is less massive than the classic Hengst, but very elegant and rather slender, linear yet intense. 13.2% alcohol by volume. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in May 2022.

About the wine:

In addition to its aromas of ripe grapefruit, orange, and persimmon, this imposing dry Riesling has a dark side that comes through most clearly in its extremely structured finish. Very deep and complex. Still very young, with a deep and bold finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Ready to drink or worth cellaring.
