Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (guide 2022) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the domain :

With courage and discipline, Céline and Isabelle Meyer manage the estate long run by their father Jean. Biodynamic viticulture shines through in wines with airy, pure, fresh, chiselled mouthfeel. The estate's two favorite grands crus are Hengst and Brand, where Riesling shines particularly brightly. Pinot Gris is part of a long tradition of dry wines, unfortunately not so common in Alsace.

Wine rated ( 2022 guide) 93+/100 (Great wine)

About the wine:

Harvested on October 4 from the three parcels at the top of the cru, Grand Cru Hengst Riesling Samain 2019 fermented for three months and aged for a further five months until bottling at the end of June. Whereas the general Hengst is soil-driven, the Samain is altitude-driven (or "sky-driven", as Isabelle puts it). The nose is very clear, fresh and nomadic in its lemony terroir expression. Sumptuous and round on the palate, this is an intense Hengst, ripe and saline on the finish, with remarkable precision, finesse and elegance. It is less massive than classic Hengst, but very elegant and rather slender, linear but intense. 13.2% declared alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in May 2022.

About the wine:

In addition to its aromas of ripe grapefruit, orange and persimmon, this imposing dry Riesling has a dark side that expresses itself above all in its extremely structured finish. Very deep and complex. Still very young in its deep, bold finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. For drinking or cellaring.
