“With nearly as much residual sugar as the corresponding Archenets, the 2008 Hengst Gewürztraminer nonetheless retains a primary juiciness. Aromas of pink grapefruit, orange zest, rose petals, cumin, and cinnamon on the nose—along with quince jelly—envelop the palate with a creamy texture. Ginger and a hint of candied citrus zest enhance the zing of the finish, which is sweet and subtly refreshing. It will be interesting to follow its development over the next 15–20 years.” (Wine Advocate – Robert Parker)

Food and Wine Pairings

This wine is remarkable with Asian cuisine that makes creative use of spices. It pairs wonderfully with curry and pepper. It goes well with cumin and hints of anise. Strong cheeses (Munster, Pont-l’Évêque, Bleu de Bresse, Maroilles) are the perfect match. Also try it with Creole and Mexican cuisine or duck à l’orange...

Wine rated (2011 guide) 18.5/20 (Wine of exceptional quality)

Rated estate (2022 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

Powerful, with a spicy nose and a deep palate featuring an impressive mineral structure. It will improve with aging.

About the estate:

Céline and Isabelle Meyer manage the estate—long led by their father Jean—with courage and discipline. The biodynamic approach shines through in their wines, which are light and refined on the palate, fresh and well-defined. The estate’s two flagship grands crus are the Hengst and the Brand, where the Riesling truly shines. The Pinot Gris is part of a long tradition of dry wines—a style that, unfortunately, is not all that common in Alsace.

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated (2012 guide) 16/20 (Very good)

About the wine:

This highly aromatic Gewürztraminer captivates from the very first whiff, with notes of Turkish delight, candied pear, and brown sugar. A touch of sweetness emerges on the palate, gently cradling all its aromas, while the terroir subtly balances its full-bodied character. The finish is long and indulgent, with intense floral notes.
